The Challenge
Africa faces serious environmental challenges, including land degradation, deforestation, biodiversity loss and extreme vulnerability to climate change.
But the region – which is home to roughly 15 per cent of the world’s population as well as some of its most iconic species – has enormous potential for sustainable growth and environmental conservation.
We work with partners to respond to some of Africa’s most urgent challenges.

UN Environment Programme, Africa Office, is located in Nairobi, Kenya. We also have a sub-regional office for West Africa in Côte d'Ivoire, a liaison office in Ethiopia and offices in South Africa and Tanzania.
The Africa Office hosts the Secretariat of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN), which was established in 1985 following a conference of African ministers of environment held in Cairo, Egypt.
